The next funding calls will open in December 2026 and will be organised around repeats of previous years’ lump sum Net Zero Technologies call and subsidy auctions for hydrogen and clean heat: 

• NZT technologies, lump sum grants:                 €multiple billions,
• Auction for clean industrial heat:                        €1billion,
• Auction for clean hydrogen:                               €500million.

Plus:

• A new NZT call aimed at small scale projects being developed by SMEs (with two submission deadlines during 2027) and,
• A new NZT call aimed specifically at maritime projects.

The new calls are a response to the shortfall of high-quality funding applications in the past for small scale (<€20m CAPEX) projects and seeing maritime projects lose out against other sectors for funding.  The application process for small scale project funding applications from SMEs will also be simplified and will operate with two call deadlines over 2027 while funding for maritime projects will be ringfenced rather than shared across multiple sectors.

The new call for small scale projects represents a huge opportunity for SMEs who are seeking funding to develop European decarbonisation projects.  Whereas previous NZT calls have required overly complicated applications from SMEs, the new call structure will simplify the financial models and CO2 savings calculations required as part of the application in an effort to hand out more cash to smaller companies.
